The Ghost Standoff Brigade

The battlefield has become transparent, and the armies fighting on it have not changed shape to match. Winning the next war will take more than new weapons. It will take a new formation — an independent maneuvering brigade built to destroy the enemy from inside his own blind spot.
A British general, surveying the war in Ukraine, described what he saw in a single phrase: a transparent battlefield where there is no sanctuary. It may be the most important sentence written about land warfare in a generation. The proliferation of cheap drones, networked sensors, and precision munitions has pierced the fog of war to a degree no army has previously had to survive. Tactical and operational information now flows in real time to the soldier, to his commander, and to the strike system standing by to act on it. The practical consequence is brutal and simple: on the modern battlefield, to be located is to be killed — and almost everything can now be located.
The evidence is everywhere the shooting is. In Ukraine, persistent surveillance has made it nearly impossible for either side to gather the mass that combined-arms maneuver requires; armored vehicles, detected the instant they move, have in many sectors stopped maneuvering altogether, digging in or hiding simply to survive. Helicopters are lost in numbers not seen since the Cold War. Israel's multi-front wars — in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, and against Iran — show the same logic at scale. In Gaza, Israel says it killed more than twenty thousand Hamas and allied fighters, the overwhelming majority not by a soldier's rifle but by standoff fires: airpower, artillery, armed drones, tank rounds, and guided munitions, called in and corrected by forward eyes who never exposed themselves. The assault rifle — for a century the infantryman's instrument of decision — has become the sidearm of the standoff age, carried for the moment things go wrong rather than for the work of winning.
The war Ogarkov saw coming
None of this would have surprised the man who predicted it forty years ago. In the early 1980s, Marshal Nikolai Ogarkov, chief of the Soviet General Staff, argued that advances in sensors, precision munitions, and automated command and control would change conventional war so profoundly that non-nuclear weapons would begin to approach nuclear ones in destructive effect. He gave the idea a name — the reconnaissance-strike complex, the tight fusion of wide-area sensors with long-range precision weapons — and a tactical-level twin, the reconnaissance-fire complex, built into brigades and divisions around artillery rather than missiles. He even anticipated, in 1984, the military use of unmanned aircraft. The United States was reaching for the same idea from the other side of the Iron Curtain, from the DARPA “Assault Breaker” program of the late 1970s through AirLand Battle and, today, Multi-Domain Operations.
For four decades this was mostly theory waiting on hardware. The sensors were scarce and costly; precision munitions were few; the command systems that could close the loop in minutes did not exist below the highest echelons. What has changed is not the concept but its price. The capabilities Ogarkov reserved for armies and air forces now fit in a backpack and cost less than a used car. A reconnaissance-fire complex is no longer a divisional abstraction managed by a fire-support cell; it can be a corporal with a quadcopter, a datalink, and the authority to call a guided round onto what he sees. The theory has been waiting forty years for the technology — and the technology has arrived. Ukraine has settled whatever debate remained about whether standoff dominates. The only open question is how to organize a force around it. That is a question of force structure, and it is the one our armies have not answered.
A force built for the wrong war
Modern Western armies — the IDF among them — remain, at their core, industrial-age instruments. They are organized around mass, combined-arms maneuver, and the seizure of ground by closing with the enemy. Standoff capabilities have been added to this structure, but added is the operative word: they are bolted on, not built in. Reconnaissance finds the enemy and is, by design, lightly armed. Artillery kills him, but answers to divisional priorities and waits in a queue. The maneuver brigade owns the terrain and the close fight, but owns neither the deep eye nor the long fist. The sensor that sees and the shooter that strikes sit in different formations, answer to different commanders, and are joined by a loop stitched across echelons and across radios.
On a transparent battlefield, that seam is fatal. The decisive interval is the time between detection and strike, and a loop assembled from three formations and four headquarters is too slow to exploit a target that may be visible for ninety seconds. Worse, the structure's founding assumption — that mass and maneuver win — has been inverted by the very transparency that now defines the battlefield. Mass that can be seen is mass that can be killed; the drone that spots a massing battalion is the same drone that ends it. This is why, in Ukraine, the grand combined-arms breakthrough has given way to something smaller and stranger: dispersed micro-teams moving in short, irregular bounds under their own drones, acting as sensors, fixers, and finishers, decisive not through the firepower they carry but through their plug into a wider network of artillery, loitering munitions, and electronic warfare. The shape of effective combat has already changed. The shape of our formations has not. The problem is not a missing weapon. It is a missing formation.
Two proofs of concept — and the gap between them
The components of the answer already exist, in pieces — and two of them are Israeli.
The first came from the bottom up. In 2019 the IDF stood up an experimental formation it called the Multidimensional Unit — Unit 888, better known by its Hebrew name, Refaim, meaning ghosts. Compact teams fusing infantry, intelligence, engineering, anti-tank, and aerial capabilities, operating drones and real-time targeting tools, Refaim repeatedly operated ahead of armored formations in Gaza and Lebanon — finding the enemy and orchestrating his destruction in minutes, without ever becoming a target itself. It proved that the forward eye, and the closing of the fire loop, can be pushed far forward and far down. But it proved it at the scale of a small, experimental unit.
The second came from the top down, out of the Artillery Corps. Its artillery brigades — now designated Fire Brigades — have been reshaped around networked, precise, on-demand firepower, fielding unmanned systems and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) rockets and missiles as core assets rather than exotic add-ons. The Fire Brigade proved that standoff firepower can be delivered fast, accurately, and across the depth of the battlefield. But it remains, in the end, fires: a service rendered on request to someone else's battle.
Taken together with Ukraine's improvised micro-teams, these formations prove that every component of standoff warfare already works. The forward eye works. The networked "fist" works. The decentralized, compressed kill loop works. What has not been built is the formation that fuses them and is free to maneuver. Refaim is the eye without the brigade. The Fire Brigade is the "fist" without the forward eye. Ukraine's micro-teams are both, but improvised, ad hoc, and lashed to whatever fires happen to be at hand. None of them is an independent maneuvering combat formation that owns the eye and the fist together and fights as one. That is the gap. Filling it is the Ghost Standoff Brigade.
What the Ghost Standoff Brigade is
The Ghost Standoff Brigade is an independent, maneuvering combat brigade built for a single purpose: the standoff destruction of the enemy, in offense and defense. It is the synthesis of Refaim's forward sensor-strike teams and the Fire Brigade's standoff firepower — the hidden eye and the long-range fist — organized not as supporting arms loaned out to someone else's fight, but as one formation that maneuvers, shapes the battlefield, and decides on its own. It does not wait in the queue for divisional fires. It owns them, and it moves with them. In doctrinal terms, it is Ogarkov's reconnaissance-fire complex finally given a body and the freedom to maneuver.
Its defining move is the decoupling of the sensor from the shooter. The element that sees the target and the platform that kills it no longer needs to be the same thing, or even in the same place. The brigade's most important capability is not any single weapon but its ability to acquire a target precisely and strike it from across its own organic arsenal — guided mortars, loitering munitions, NLOS missiles — or to reach back into divisional fires when the target demands it. The munition exposes its launch point; the forward team does not. That is what keeps the brigade alive while it kills, and it is the whole logic of the transparent battlefield expressed as a formation rather than a procedure.
How it maneuvers: three tiers
The brigade maneuvers through three complementary elements, each trading mobility and protection against reach and risk.
Commando. The deepest and lightest. These teams operate behind enemy lines on foot, carrying only light weapons and man-portable systems — and often no significant munitions of their own. Their job is acquisition and fire management: to find, fix, and feed targets to the heavy standoff fires delivered from far to their rear. It is the purest expression of the doctrine — eyes without a fist, lethal precisely because they are invisible.
Fast. The first to field and the most likely to make contact. Built on high-mobility 4x4 platforms — JLTV-class vehicles — the Fast element trades depth for speed and organic punch, carrying munitions such as Israel's Iron Sting, the guided 120mm mortar round that delivers precision out to roughly ten kilometers. It is the brigade's quick-reaction maneuver: arrive, acquire, strike, reposition before a counterstrike can find it.
Mobile. The heaviest tier, mounted on fast, armored platforms — Israel's Eitan, the American Stryker, and their analogues. With protection comes reach: Spike NLOS for precision strikes twenty-five kilometers and beyond, guided mortars, and medium-range loitering munitions. The Mobile element hunts the targets that decide battles — enemy artillery, command nodes, logistics, the divisional arsenal — at ranges where the enemy cannot reach back.
Together they let the brigade maneuver across the entire depth of the battlefield, mass standoff effects wherever it chooses, and shape a sector to its will — all while presenting the enemy with almost nothing he can target in return. This is maneuver, not support: the formation goes where the decision is, instead of waiting for the decision to come to it.
Command and survival
A formation like this cannot be run from the top. Its entire advantage is speed — the collapse of the interval between seeing and striking — and that advantage evaporates the moment a target must be routed up to an echelon for permission. The Ghost Brigade therefore demands mission command in its most radical form: the authority to close a fire loop pushed down to the team that holds the target, so that the corporal with the drone can call the strike, not merely request it. The brigade commander sets intent, allocates fires, and deconflicts; the forward teams decide and act. This is not a loosening of discipline but a different discipline — one measured in seconds saved.
Survival rests on the same logic that makes the brigade lethal: never be both the eye and the obvious target. Signature management is not a nicety but the core skill — dispersion, emission control, terrain masking, decoys, and the disciplined movement that lets a team live under constant observation. The shooter, when it fires, accepts exposure and displaces immediately; the eye stays dark. Honesty compels a caveat here, and it strengthens rather than weakens the case. The transparent battlefield is contested, not one-sided: Ukraine has shown that dominance swings with the balance between sensors and countermeasures, and that jamming, GPS denial, and air defense can blind the network and reopen windows for maneuver. A Ghost Brigade built only for the connected, GPS-blessed fight would be a liability. It must be able to fight degraded — with redundant navigation, inertial and optical guidance, and teams trained to act on commander's intent when the datalink dies. Built that way, the same electronic-warfare environment that threatens it becomes the cover it hides behind.
The human paradox
None of this is a triumph of technology over the soldier. The opposite is true. Precisely because these teams operate small, exposed, and often deep, the human standard they demand is higher, not lower. A Ghost soldier must master orientation and survivability where there is no friendly line to fall back to, and be an expert in camouflage and concealment, because remaining unseen is the mission. He must integrate artillery, loitering munitions, and drone-delivered effects from a position of acute vulnerability and sustain the cognitive and physical load of operating for days under constant surveillance — demands that make selection, training, and psychological resilience as decisive as any weapon. And he must be a competent infantryman: not because infantry combat is the mission, but because it is the failure mode. When a Ghost team is located and engaged, its fighting is overwhelmingly defensive — a fight to break contact and survive long enough to return to the thing it exists to do, which is to kill the enemy from somewhere the enemy cannot see. The brigade is built around soldiers trained to the highest standard of infantry whose first measure of success is never having to fight as infantry at all.
The objection — and why it fails
The institutional objections write themselves. The artilleryman will say this is merely artillery by another name. The infantry commander will say it strips mass from the brigades that must still take and hold ground. The traditionalist will say no battle is won until boots close on the objective. The budget officer will say it is an expensive boutique formation the force cannot afford to scale. Each misreads the war we are already fighting. Artillery delivers fires on request; the Ghost Brigade hunts, on its own initiative, with its own eyes. Mass that can be seen is mass that can be killed — and ground is held today not by packing soldiers onto it but by denying the enemy the ability to mass against it, which is precisely standoff work. The objective is no longer the hilltop; it is the enemy's capacity to fight, most of which now sits well beyond rifle range. And the cost objection has it backwards: the brigade is built largely from systems already in inventory; drones, NLOS missiles, guided mortars, existing platforms — reorganized rather than reinvented. It is not a luxury bolted onto the real army. It is the real army's sharpest edge.
Build it now
The case for the Ghost Standoff Brigade is, at bottom, a case for honesty about the war already in front of us. A single brigade that can find and orchestrate the destruction of an enemy artillery group — independently, while remaining unseen — is worth far more than its order of battle suggests. It is a multiplier on every gun, missile, and munition behind it, and a formation the enemy can neither find, fix, nor fight on equal terms.
The armies that win the next war will not be the ones with the most steel forward. They will be the ones that built a formation to fight from inside the enemy's blind spot — and gave it the freedom to maneuver. Ogarkov drew the blueprint forty years ago. Ukraine proved the necessity. Refaim built the eye and the Fire Brigade built the fist. What remains is to stop treating them as separate things and to build, deliberately and on a scale, what they plainly add up to: the maneuver formation of the standoff age. Build it.
